Fellowships

The CPS operates a visiting fellow scheme that is open to advanced graduate students, academics or practitioners wishing to conduct research relevant to the Center’s mission. Fellows can come to Budapest for one to several months for library research, to collaborate with colleagues at the center, the university or the Budapest based Open Society network programs. Fellows may be writing up research, developing teaching and training materials or generally wishing to take advantage of the academic resources available at the CEU.  Fellows are welcome to consider joint research projects and stay in touch with the CPS beyond their stay in Budapest.  In large part, Fellows would be self-financing, alternatively, Fellows may be supported by one of the schemes:

In order to enhance the mutual benefits of this scheme, this page sets out what fellows can expect during their stay at CPS, and also, what might be expected of them in turn.

1. Library and IT access

The CEU has one of the largest English language libraries in the region and fellows will have full access rights.  It is well supplied with social science research on transition and development issues, complemented by a large electronic database of journals.

2. Practical support

Fellows will receive help in getting settled into Budapest, including assistance  in finding suitable accommodation and getting around the city. Fellows will be allocated office space at the Center with phone and computer access. While at the CPS, the fellow will be listed on the CPS website with a research profile attached.   Previous fellows’ profiles will also remain on the website.

3. Named researcher as host

To ensure that Fellows get to make the most of their time at CEU, one of the CPS researchers will act as a principal contact point.  He or she will help the Fellow settle in, make introductions to relevant colleagues at the university and in the OSI programmes and, if requested, CPS can arrange for research assistance from amongst the postgraduate population at the CEU.

4. Opportunity to present work for feedback

Fellows are requested to present their work in at least one public event that CPS will help organise. Depending on the work and the fellow, this could be a staff seminar, a public lecture, or a full workshop.

5. Publications

Fellows would be expected to provide one publication for the CPS website and/or other CEU outlet.  CPS has several different publications, including a working paper series, policy studies series and an edited volume series.  The selection of the appropriate format would be done by mutual agreement.  Some assistance can be offered in preparing for publication, for instance, peer review and copy editing.
